Sports & Extra-Curricular Activities

Fitzroy School offers a wide range of sporting opportunities both within the school and through regional clubs. Please keep an eye on Hero for registration dates and details.

Inter-school Exchange (Years 5 & 6) During Term 2, our senior students compete against other New Plymouth schools in Basketball, Netball, Rugby, and Soccer. Trials for these teams are typically held at the end of Term 1.

Seasonal Sports & Events

• Athletics: Held in Term 4 at Fitzroy School. 

• Cross Country: Our school event is held in Term 3. Top runners may qualify for the New Plymouth and Taranaki Championships.

• Skateboarding: We encourage students to bring their boards on a class-rotation basis (check notices for your child's scheduled time). All students must provide their own gear and helmet. We hold a Skateboarding Championship and display in Term 4.

• Surfing: Available in Terms 1 and 4 for interested Year 6 students.

• Swimming: Our onsite junior and senior pools are open during Terms 1 and 4. We provide free swimming lessons for Years 0–3 via outside providers, while our Year 4–6 teachers lead sessions focused on water safety. Swimming sports/displays take place in Term 1.

• Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon: This popular annual event sees many of our students participate. Parents are responsible for registration and transport, but a Fitzroy School tent and staff members will be there on the day to support the team. Sign up at Weet-Bix TRYathlon.

Weekly & Club Sports

• Basketball & Miniball: We have Basketball and Miniball teams that play after school or on weekends. Terms 2 and 3. For more competitive options, contact Taranaki Basketball.

• Cricket: School teams compete on weekends, Terms 1 and 4. Further info is available via Taranaki Cricket.

• Hockey: Our school teams play on weekends, Term 2. We also host Taranaki Hockey reps for in-school skills sessions throughout the year.

• Rippa Rugby: We enter a senior Rippa team in the school championships annually. 

• Touch Rugby: School teams play on Wednesdays with City Touch in Bell Block during Terms 1 and 4. 

• Netball: We have junior and senior teams that play mid week with Taranaki Netball during Terms 2 and 3. https://www.netballtaranaki.org.nz/
