Regular attendance at school is fundamental because every day at school matters. Regular attendance ensures children have every opportunity to thrive and grow. At Fitzroy School all children are expected to attend for the full school day (8.55am - 3.00pm).
When children are absent for health or other reasons, parents are asked to let the school know via the Hero app, telephone the school absence line (758 3084) by 8.45am. There is an answerphone on our office phone or simply send us a text to the absence text only line 027 758 7273. Please ensure that you let us know why the student is absent. Reasons may include::
they are sick
they are on holiday
they are attending a funeral or tangi
there is a family emergency
If we do not hear from you, we will get in touch with you in the morning. Notifying us early as to any reason your child may not be at school helps us to ensure that we keep all of our children safe.
If students are going to arrive late, we would also appreciate a call or text. If you child arrives at school after 8.55am, they must report to the Main Office so that they can be recorded as present before going to their rooms. They will be given a yellow card to give to their teacher.
If you need to remove your child during school hours e.g. medical appointments, you must sign the child out in the office before collecting them. You will be given a leaving card (red) to give to their teacher to say that you have signed the child out. The child will not be released by the teacher unless this card is produced.
We encourage you to use the mid-term breaks for holidays. If you do need to take an extended holiday of more than 5 school days where your child/ren are away during term time, please send an email to the Principal.
Whanau are to send an email to the Principal, with at lease one weeks notification of the absence.
A discussion will be held with either the Principal or Teacher to talk about learning that will be missed while the child is away. The Teacher may suggest sites or resources to support your child's learning while away if appropriate.
The request and approval for this extended holiday is noted on the child’s Attendance Page.
The Ministry of Education has set a national target of 80% of students attending school at least 90% of the time. This means that tamariki should not be absent for more than 5 days per term to ensure that they are at school and achieving. Fitzroy School’s attendance target is the same as the national target.
